Creating machine-learning powered, research tools to aid data scientists in understanding and deriving insights from vast amounts of text.

Consilience clusters and categorizes large amounts of unstructured text with models and machine learning, utilizing interactive data visualization to present complex data in an understandable and visually appealing way, developed at the Institute for Quantitative Social Science, Harvard University.

Clustering Page, Beta

Consilience, a research project to create a tool for classifying large document sets into related topic clusters in order to conceptualize vast amounts of information. As developers were building the backend and wiring up initial UI prototypes, detailed design mockups were being confirmed with researchers and stakeholders before committing to code. Lo-fi mockups provided a simple way to get early designs into an easy to share PDF, with linked buttons allowing the user to click from page to page, just like a dynamic website.

Document Upload Wireframes

After the initial beta release, additional features were built on, like document upload, which previously would require a lot of sysadmin document file formatting in order to be properly ingested. Components and workflows are sketched and reviewed with developers, designers, project managers, as well as stakeholders in order to confirm design solutions before committing them to more detailed mockups.

Summary Page, Prototype

The UI was being converted from PrimeFaces JSF to PrimeNG Angular UI components. User testing and surveys were conducted to rethink workflows and components. Additional D3 data visualization graphs and charts were incorporated and styled. Interactive prototypes were built using Balsamiq and user tested with university professor stakeholders.
